When Timber Retaining Walls Fit a Frisco Yard
Wood has the lowest price range of any wall material: depending on the project, $13 to $30 per square foot of wall face installed, against $15 to $50 for block and $20 to $100 for natural stone.
It also has the shortest life: 10 to 40 years, with pressure-treated wood around 30. Concrete walls, by comparison, last 50 to 100 years.
The trade-off is plain in those numbers: a lower price now against a shorter life. Whether that trade makes sense depends on the wall you need and how long you plan to keep it, and the free on-site estimate lays the timber price next to block or stone so you can decide. Railroad Ties and Timber Retaining Walls in Frisco
Railroad ties are creosote-treated wood, and the creosote is toxic. Ties are rarely used for walls now for that reason.
When they are used, railroad tie walls run $18 to $30 per square foot.
If you have an old tie wall that needs to come out, removal is part of the price. Demolition runs $15 to $30 per linear foot. The retaining wall repair page covers removing old railroad-tie walls in more detail.
Ask about an old tie wall when you call or send the form, and it will be looked at during the free on-site estimate.
How Long Timber Retaining Walls Last in Frisco
A timber wall lasts 10 to 40 years, and pressure-treated wood lasts around 30.
Water matters for any wall. Without drainage, hydrostatic pressure builds behind it. Basic drainage for a retaining wall is a perforated pipe at the wall’s base, gravel backfill and weep holes.
Footings that lack strength, and missing rebar, can also make a wall fail early.
North Texas clay is part of the picture here. The main clay mapped in Collin County takes in water rapidly when it is dry and cracked and very slowly when it is moist, so the soil and drainage behind a wood wall get a close look on site.
Clean the weep holes yearly and send downspouts away from the wall. If a timber wall you already have is leaning or bowing, cracking or shifting, see the retaining wall repair page.
What Timber Walls Cost
Depending on the project, a timber wall runs $13 to $30 per square foot of wall face, installed. Where your wall lands in that range comes down to the height, the length and the site.
A typical complete retaining wall project of any material runs about $3,200 to $9,400.
These move the final price:
- height;
- length;
- access, since tight or difficult sites need more manual labor;
- slope, since sloped yards may need terracing, which can add 50% or more;
- soil, since clay-heavy soil can raise excavation labor by up to 50%;
- drainage;
- removing an old wall.
See the retaining wall cost page for how wood compares with every other wall type. Your price is set at the free on-site estimate, so call or send the form.
Permits for Timber Retaining Walls in Frisco
Frisco’s no-permit rule names masonry walls under 24 inches. For a wood wall, ask Frisco Building Inspections before building.
Any retaining wall taller than 36 inches must follow a design submitted by a registered engineer, and no part of a retaining wall may interfere with or alter a drainage swale between lots. If a wood fence will sit on the wall, Frisco’s wooden fence standards say posts attached to or supported by a retaining wall need foundation and anchorage that keep the wall from moving. The permit fee is $150 per wall, and it doubles if work starts before the permit is obtained.
Contractors need a valid Frisco contractor registration and a permit to work in the city. Rules change, so confirm with Development Services, Building Inspections before you build.
What the Free On-Site Estimate Checks
For a timber wall, we look at:
- the height and length, which set the permit and engineering requirements;
- where water reaches the wall and where it can drain;
- the soil along the wall line;
- any old wall or railroad ties that need to come out;
- access for equipment and materials.
Your price is set at the free on-site estimate, and a block or stone price can sit beside it if you want one. Call us Mon–Sat 8–6 or send the form.
