When Block Retaining Walls Fit a Frisco Yard
A segmental block wall is made of interlocking blocks stacked without mortar. Traits that set it apart include: it uses no mortar, it allows slight ground movement, and it handles 3 to 4 feet of height without added reinforcement.
On price, block sits between the other common materials. Depending on the project, a block wall runs $15 to $50 per square foot of wall face installed, against $13 to $30 for timber and $20 to $100 for natural stone.
Height is the other deciding factor. In Frisco, a retaining wall taller than 36 inches must follow a design submitted by a registered engineer, so the planned height decides whether a block wall goes through engineering before it is built.

What Goes Into Block Retaining Walls in Frisco
The diagram below shows a drained block wall in cross-section. Here is what a drained wall can include.
Interlocking blocks. The face of the wall is a stack of interlocking blocks with no mortar between them.
Perforated pipe at the base. Basic drainage starts with a perforated pipe along the base of the wall.
Gravel behind the blocks. Basic drainage includes gravel backfill. A segmental block maker recommends free-draining gravel with virtually no fines, which it calls “wall rock”.
Filter fabric. The same maker recommends filter fabric above the wall rock and below the topsoil.
Weep holes. Weep holes round out basic drainage. Criblock designs are another drainage option.
A sound footing. Footings that lack strength, and missing rebar, can make a wall fail early.

What the Free On-Site Estimate Looks At for Block Retaining Walls in Frisco
These are the things that move the price of a block wall, and each one gets measured or checked on site.
- Height and length. They set the square footage, and the height decides whether Frisco’s permit and engineering rules apply.
- Slope. Sloped yards may need terracing, which can add 50% or more, and sloped terrain can raise labor by 50% or more.
- Soil. Clay-heavy soil can raise excavation labor by up to 50%, and walls on clay often need extra reinforcement.
- Drainage. Where water reaches the wall now, including downspouts and swales between lots. Adding drainage behind a wall later runs $60 to $70 per linear foot.
- Access. Tight or difficult sites need more manual labor.
- Old walls. Removing one runs $15 to $30 per linear foot.

What Block Walls Cost Per Square Foot
Depending on the project, a segmental block wall runs $15 to $50 per square foot of wall face, installed. Where your wall lands in that range comes down to the height, the length and the site.
A typical complete retaining wall project runs about $3,200 to $9,400.
If the wall is tall enough to need an engineered design, engineering runs $500 to $750 per wall. The retaining wall cost page compares block with stone, timber and poured concrete.

Permits and Engineering for Block Retaining Walls in Frisco
Frisco’s code says no permit is required for a masonry retaining wall less than 24 inches tall. Ask the city whether your wall counts as masonry. A retaining wall taller than 36 inches must follow a design submitted by a registered engineer, and no part of a retaining wall may interfere with or alter a drainage swale between lots.
If a fence will sit on the wall, fence posts attached to or supported by a retaining wall need foundation and anchorage that keep the wall from moving, and where a wall raises a fence, Frisco measures fence height from the ground at the highest point.
The permit fee is $150 per wall, and it doubles if work starts before the permit is obtained. Permits go through Development Services, Building Inspections, and contractors need a valid Frisco contractor registration to work in the city. Rules change, so check the current version before you build.
Keeping a Block Wall Draining
Upkeep is short: clean the weep holes yearly and send downspouts away from the wall.
Signs of trouble include leaning or bowing, leaking or seeping, cracking, efflorescence and foundation shifting. If you see any of those on an existing wall, the retaining wall repair page explains the options, and a call or the form gets someone out to look.
